"Politics and Government in the Society of the Future"

LIBERTY UPDATE 6/17/99

Welcome to Liberty Goddess Magazine, another independent journal of research from the Media Science Foundation.  Our purpose is to build a bridge between popular culture and political virtue, to initiate discussion about the future of American government, and to define the elements of cultural perception about law, politics, and the role of government in society.

This first issue will introduce some of the regular features of Liberty Goddess, which will be expanded in the future.  This includes:

This month, we feature an interview with Katherine "Kat" Gallant, Libertarian candidate for Governor in the state of Arizona.  This interview includes Kat's response to statements by various characters in the dialogues of Plato's Republic.  As will be the case in future issues, there is an attempt to make a connection with classical philosophy and the modern world, especially for the sake of showing which models of the past are useful in modern society.

Another regular feature of Liberty Goddess will be the "Archetypes of Political Mythology."
There is a certain relationship between the symbols of our political and patriotic ideals, and the historical and cultural context from which they emerge.  We will examine this relationship, in terms of the meaning and function of symbols over time.  This will include discussion of "political mythology" and "civil religion."  For instance:

For the purpose of comparison, we will look at these aspects over time and space, cross culturally with the role of symbolism in other nations, and with a special emphasis on the roots of political thought in western civilization with the classical period in Greece and Rome.

Finally, the most important aspect of Liberty Goddess will be the study of the importance of documents. . . declarations, contracts, legal documents, and how the power of these documents can increase or diminish over time.  The first step will be an investigation into the history of written law, especially declarations and constitutions.  What gives power to a document?  This includes the examination of the Bill of Rights and recent declarations like the United Nations' "Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:  On October 22nd, 1998, The President of the United States signed a bill into law to censor the internet, despite the fact that the Justice department of his own administration has deemed the bill unconstitutional.  Read more about this bill, which is expected to be effective by the end of November, 1998, and find out what you can do to protect First Amendment rights in the United States.
